Android is Most Popular Smartphone Platform

The folks over at Mashable are reporting that Google’s Android  operating system has now surpassed all others to become the world’s most popular mobile phone platform.

According to the post, Android’s now at the top of the list, surpassing Nokia, Blackberry, and iPhone sales in Q4 2010.

Happy Birthday, Android!

Thanks to the good folks at ReadWriteWeb for noticing that today marks the third anniversary of our favorite mobile platform, Android.

Three years ago, we seemed to live in a Blackberry & iPhone world, but today, Android has grown to become the most popular mobile phone platform in America, and the #2 worldwide (but look out, Nokia)!

We’ve helped a lot of clients integrate Android into their business operations, often times replacing iStuff & Blackberries, so we find it amusing to witness how far it’s come in such a short period of time.

Making The Most of Mobile IM

Trillian for Android, public betaUpdate: The folks at Trillian released an update today.

When you run your own small or medium-sized business, it’s becoming increasingly crucial to leverage instant messaging, and on mobile phones, that’s been a rather cumbersome experience, with separate apps for each of the major IM platforms (Yahoo!, MSN, GTalk, etc.).

While some of those are pretty good (and others are not), there’s a (large) negative impact on your battery life to run them all simultaneously, and they all have very different user interfaces (ranging from the great, to the dismal).

On a computer, there are some fantastic multi-protocol applications, such as Digsby & Trillian, which allow you to be logged-into all of your IM accounts simultaneously, through a consistent user interface.

While the folks @ Digsby haven’t done much to move to the Android mobile world, Trillian recently released a public beta of their new Android app, and it’s pretty exciting!

Too Easy to Create Android Apps?

Time will tell, but the team over at Google is doing their darnedest to help empower anyone with the desire (not necessarily the skill) to create their own Android apps.

Their new “App Inventor” is a product that’s been in development for more than a year, and promised to bring Android development capabilities to the masses. Check-out the info they’ve already made available, and watch the video for a quick overview:
