Gone Android

Android logoBack when the old cell phone started dying on me, and I accepted it was time to upgrade, the first thing that came to mind was, “Now, it’s time to get an iPhone.”

Have to admit, just emotionally, that would have been my first choice.

However, my next door neighbor has one, and complains about the signal in our neighborhood. AT&T isn’t particularly well know for its coverage in San Diego, but it’s especially bad here, in our little “valley,” with no data service, and rarely more than one or two bars of voice signal.

That left me looking for my next choice, and that led me to Android.

My wife & I got ourselves a matched pair of T-Mobile MyTouch phones a few weeks back, and now that I’ve had a chance to get really familiar with them, I can’t say enough good things.

So far, no buyer’s remorse.

myTouchBlack2Being a “Google junkie,” I especially like the tight integration with Google services. Setting it up to sync (in near real time) with my Google Apps mail, contacts, calendar, and other favorites (like Google Reader) was a breeze.

And now that almost every major web destination has an App for Android (like Facebook, Pandora, etc., etc), I don’t feel like I compromised on anything the iPhone offers.

And, by the way, the integration between Google Maps, the contact book, and GPS is not only slick, it’s brilliant.

There are a ton of Apps I’ve already discovered that I don’t think I could ever live without again, and in the days and weeks to come, I’ll be sure to take some time reviewing them here.
