Digsby is Cool IM

IM & chat have been frustrating for me.

There are just too many (incompatible) systems, and it seems that you need them all if you’re to stay in-touch with your contacts… Some people use MSN, others use Yahoo, and still others use AIM…

My computer would be out of memory if I ran them all.

And I didn’t even mention Google Talk (my personal favorite).

So, for years, I’ve been on a quest to find “the ultimate” universal IM client program… One that would let me chat with everyone.

First, I messed with Miranda, and then Trillian, but after paying for a Trillian Pro license for a few years, and seeing almost no improvements, I moved to Open Source…  GAIM, and then Pidgin.

But again… Their progress moved at a snail’s pace.

And I have to admit, I’m a fan of Google Talk, especially, and support for that protocol has been spotty, at best. I was even starting to like (or, “put-up with”) Pidgin, until I found that it can’t handle back-to-back chat requests from my site’s Google Talk badge without requiring a re-start.

Today, I discovered Digsby, and my life has changed!

This is the slickest (is that a word?) Universal IM client I’ve set eyes on (and yes, it’s free).

It not only supports all of the current protocols (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc.), it also notifies you when you have messages at any number of GMail, Google Apps, Yahoo, and/or POP mail accounts.

The crazy thing even lets you know when you have messages waiting at the popular social networking sites, like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

If you’re looking for one single application to bring all of your communications together, I can’t image anything better than Digsby.
